Production Log Week 12: Graphics

2 out of 8 scenes were graphics in my documentary so I spent most of this week constructing my graphics in iMovie. The first graphical features were to do with the history of illegal music downloading. I managed to run a voiceover over this scene By gathering together images such as download software, facts and figures and logos.
The second graphical scene featured a quiz. To entertain my audience I made a scene using Microsoft PowerPoint and designed graphics that were exactly the same to "Who wants to be a millionaire". I made up an interactive quiz that asked the audience questions about certain facts and figures to do with illegal music downloading. I also ran a voiceover on this scene as I could ask the audience the questions with the graphics responding to my answers. Arranging the graphics were really difficult, when I tried to move them in certain locations of my documentary, they all ended up in different places.
I also used some graphics in the cutaways that I edited in the last scene. This included changing the colour of the interviews to black and white to make them look more effective, speeding them up and running a voiceover to make it sound as though I was summarizing my documentary.

Production Log Week 11: Editing
Now that I have received some feedback on the rough edit of my documentary, I could now put together the full version of other things that I have not included yet such as cutaways. I decided to feature cutaways in the interviews of my documentary. I chose to have them in my interviews because it helped with the pace of my documentary and made it look more relevant for the visual of my topic. The main advantage was that I had filmed the radio one presenter's awards and other props in his studio. This indicated to me that I could use these as cutaways to introduce him or even when he explains a certain topic.
As I have three interviews contributing in my documentary, I did not have to record a voiceover to ask the questions to my interviewee. However I added a voiceover to the remaining two of my interviews. This was simply because I did not ask my interviewee the questions when the camera was framed on them. Instead I asked my interviewee the question with the camera focused on me. To save time I ended up cutting myself out of myself in the interview to save time.

Production Log Week 10: Presentation

Throughout this week I have been editing my documentary. However this was only a rough edited version of my documentary so that I could show my class and teacher what I had put together so far. The class was responsible for writing down what their opinion was on my documentary and after it was finished give feedback. I received some feedback that consisted of negative and positive points. The negative side was based on the fact that I did not have much in make my documentary interactive to my audience. The audience felt that this would have made my documentary much more engaging. Another point was that there was not a lot of exposition in my documentary making this very unsecure.

Production Log Week 5 Interviews

Within this week, I have uploaded the interview that I have done with PRS. After watching it through carefully I have noticed that I have filmed the questions that I have asked the interviewee in a different angle from the interviewer. As a result of this the two contributors looked as though they were facing the same way when it came to reviewing it on a computer. This was a problem for me as it made my filming look sloppy and unprofessional. However my teacher told me that I can switch the angle of the shot through final cut pro so that I would look as though I was looking in the right direction.

I had arranged an interview to go to the illegal downloaders house in my documentary for thursday this week in Rainham. As I only had two lessons that day, one of them being music as my first lesson and the other being media during the middle of the day, I felt that this would be an ideal day to film as I was allowed to film during my media lesson. My contributor also finished college at 12:00pm which was when I was granted permisson to leave during school and I also had no more lessons at the time. Unfortunately my contributor had to go out somewhere and left me short notice of the fact that I might not be able to film the interview that day. However I have arranged to meet him on sunday as we are both free and can film on sunday afternoon.

Production Log Week 3 Interview with PRS
Interview with PRS
I spent this week trying to get in contact with a contributor called PRS. PRS are a organisation that claims royalty for the music industries and artists everytime their music is advertised or used. I first recieved an email from the assistant manager of PR telling me that they would be happy to help. However she mentioned that this would be a phone interview to gather all the information that I would need. She also asked if I could do the interview this Thursday, this seemed like a problem as it was so short notice. She then asked me if I could send another email with the list of questions I wanted to ask.
Seeing as this interview would be the most important interview of my illegal music downolading documentary, I felt that an interview over the phone would not be enough and that I should first see if it was likely to have a face to face interview. The idea of this was that I would be able to see as well as hear the information I recieved. A face to face interview would be useful to switch from the presenter the the interviewee in a few cutaways to make my documentary more engaging. After arranging this interview, I then got an answer saying that I would be able to go to their office at 12:30 and interview the head of PR in Oxford Circus.
After showing the assistant manager the set of questions I wanted to ask the day before my interview, I recieved a reply that the interview that I wanted to do face to face is all set up and ready and that she would see me tomorrow.

Shooting Script Evaluation
I have managed to finish creating my script this week. I first worked on the visual side of it mentioning the instructions of what the presenter and camera will do. Creating the visual side first helped me to structure the order in which I want my documentary to run. the visual script is very detailed in including some exposition, camera angles and shots as well as location and scene number.
On the other hand working on the audio side of my documentary was more successfull. unlike before, I now have a clear idea of what music and sound effects to feature in my documentary. I have also planned out what I want the presenter to say and where the music should come in with each scene. Even though I do not exactly no what my contributor will say, I have planned a script for them so that it could give me a rough idea of what to expect while presenting. This enchanced my research of what facts and figures I should mention in my documentary.
Making my script overall has been challenging as some of my contributors have not replyed back to when I last contacted them . This interferes with the making of my script as some of the contributors may not be able to participate in my documentary, it also applys pressure as I only have a certain time limit in terms of pre production. However One of my contributors that I phoned two weeks ago has phoned me and said that an interview is possible within BBCs radio 1 station. This is a huge relief to me because if one of my contributors cannot contribute toward my documentary. This leaves me with a contingency plan to fall back on.

My Production Log Week 1
Thursday: Illegal downloader: REPLYED Dj: NO REPLY
_cartoon.gif)
I have come across some challenges this week as some of my contributors have not got back to me yet telling me if they want to take part or if it is possible for an interview. Another dilemma is that my illegal downloader does not want me to use his house to interview him but is fine with an interview somewhere else. Furthermore I did not want to use the apple store to host my interview about legal downloading.
